Tribble’s Story: Why Adopting a Senior Dog Changes Everything

Tribble

When Susan Spring first met Tribble at Patty Baker Humane Society Naples, he was standing in a big playpen, looking up with bright eyes and boundless curiosity. Despite his age, Tribble radiated energy and life. Susan remembers noticing immediately how curious and adorable he was.

What struck her most though, was the sadness behind his story.

Tribble’s original owner had passed away, leaving him without the only home he had ever known. He had been overlooked time and time again by adopters. Susan couldn’t understand why no one wanted him until she realized the likely reason – his age. Tribble had been surrendered to Domestic Animal Services at the age of 12.

Susan had come to PBHSN because her Chihuahua was lonely and needed companionship. When she saw Tribble, she felt an instant connection. He was the same size and had the same gentle presence – she knew he would be perfect! Holding him for the first time, Susan felt overwhelming joy and love. At that moment, she knew he was coming home with her.

From that day on, Tribble became much more than a companion; he became Susan’s best friend.

After her other dog passed away, Susan couldn’t bear to leave Tribble alone. He deserved the love and companionship he had provided for her so he became a service dog! Tribble stayed by Susan’s side through everything, including a major surgery, where he remained faithfully with her throughout her recovery.

Tribble goes everywhere with Susan, and wherever he goes, happiness follows. Susan says people can’t help but smile when they see him. Tribble has a gift — the ability to bring joy simply by being himself.

When Susan tells people that Tribble is now 23 years old, they’re stunned. But she never doubted for a second that she’d have him for a long time. His age was never a concern.

Looking back now, Susan realizes Tribble’s purpose goes far beyond companionship.

His life is proof that senior animals can live long lives filled with love, happiness, and meaning. They do not deserve to be overlooked or left without homes simply because of their age and Tribble’s story challenges that belief in the most beautiful way possible.

And in a way, Tribble is still giving back.

By sharing his story, Susan hopes he can inspire others to open their hearts to senior animals waiting in shelters and show them that adopting an older pet doesn’t mean less love or less time.

Sometimes, it means more.
